Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 2025
Who we are
Newsglish ("Real news. Real English.") is operated by Business as Usual English (businessasusualenglish.com). This policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our platform.
Information we collect
Account information — If you create an account, we store your name, email address, password (stored as a secure hash, never in plain text), and optional profile details such as your English level, native language, and industry.
Learning activity — We store vocabulary and phrases you save, articles you bookmark, and articles you submit for lesson creation. This data is linked to your account so you can access it when you sign in.
Anonymous usage data — We log aggregate, non-identifiable activity such as which articles are viewed, which words are saved (without linking them to your account), and when AI explanations are requested. These analytics tables do not contain your account ID, email, or name.
Technical data — Like most websites, our hosting provider may process standard server logs (IP address, browser type, pages visited) for security and performance.
How we use your information
- To provide and personalise your learning experience (saved words, articles, submissions)
- To generate AI-powered lesson content and explanations via the Anthropic Claude API
- To improve our content and platform using anonymous aggregate statistics
- To communicate with you about your account if necessary
Third-party services
We use trusted third-party services to operate Newsglish:
- Supabase — database hosting (account and learning data stored in the EU/US depending on region)
- Anthropic — AI text generation for lessons and explanations. Highlighted text you request explanations for is sent to Anthropic's API. Do not highlight text containing personal or sensitive information.
- Supadata — article text extraction from URLs you submit
These providers process data on our behalf under their own privacy policies and data processing terms.
Cookies and sessions
We use a session cookie to keep you signed in. This cookie is essential for the service to work and is not used for advertising or tracking across other websites.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the following rights:
- Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- Correction — update your account details at any time via Account Settings
- Deletion — delete your account from Account Settings. Your data will be permanently removed within 30 days
- Objection / restriction — contact us if you wish to restrict how we process your data
- Portability — request your saved vocabulary and account data in a readable format
If you are in the European Union, these rights are provided under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). If you are in Colombia, these rights are provided under Law 1581 of 2012 (Habeas Data). If you sign in with Google, Google processes your authentication according to Google's Privacy Policy. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at grant@businessasusualenglish.com.
Data retention
We keep your account data for as long as your account is active. When you request deletion, we mark your account for removal and permanently delete all associated data within 30 days. Anonymous analytics data is retained indefinitely in aggregate form and cannot be linked back to you.
Children
Newsglish is designed for adult learners. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has created an account, please contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the revised version on this page with an updated date. Continued use of Newsglish after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
